OCU applauds CMNC's proposal to consider additional charging for numbers 118

16 ene. 2017

After numerous complaints and sanctions to different operators for a misuse of so-called information numbers (118), used as a telephone directory, the CNMC formalized yesterday the request to consider these numbers as additional charging services. This measure is aimed at protecting users and avoiding frequent abuses, such as the progression of calls.  As OCU had already reported, this type of numbering has been used for unauthorized services such as tarot, adult content, etc. The CNMC has solved a total of 16 sanctioning files against operators of numbers 118 for a misuse of numbering. OCU had already warned of the danger of these 118 https://www.ocu.org/tecnologia/internet-telefonia/informe/precio-numeros-telefono/el-the-danger-of-the-telephoneguidelines-118 Which in many cases became a free way to confuse the consumer with very high tariffs (up to € 4 / minute) and a service of progression of call that could lengthen the calls and multiply the invoice to 116 € for a call of only 15 minutes. In order to put an end to this situation, the CNMC has proposed to the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda different measures aimed at protecting consumers, among which is to classify the range of 118 within the additional charging services. OCU reminds the consumer of the possibility of deactivating additional calls and messages, in case you do not use this type of service (calls to 905, 806 ....) By calling your company or even directly from the Customer Area of Your operator. OCU supports the initiative of the CNMC and reminds the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda of the urgent need to take measures to avoid fraudulent use of numbering 118 and protect the consumer.
