OCU criticizes the Spanish government obstacles to the disappearance of roaming
26 oct. 2016The Spanish proposal to allow operators to charge high wholesale prices for roaming services and the establishment of exceptions to collect above the ceilings prevent, according to OCU, the establishment of a true digital single market in the EU.
Despite announcements that the end of roaming had reached the European Union, the Organization of Consumers and Users warning of the existence of movement within the European institutions that can seriously jeopardize the ultimate demise of the extra costs for the use of mobile phone roaming.
An example is the meeting today takes place in Brussels between the permanent representatives of member states to discuss a Spanish proposal that would allow operators to request national regulators permission to charge above the ceilings agreed for wholesale prices for roaming services.
OCU to the current proposal of the Slovak presidency placing the wholesale price at 10.50 euros per gigabyte is wrong because it lies well above that had already made the European Commission and the even more ambitious proposal by the European Parliament. If in addition to high prices is possible to overcome these by exceptions as proposed by the Spanish government, European citizens will not enjoy a genuine single market in the digital realm as traders less size will be forced to either raise prices or either to eliminate roaming their service offerings. Therefore from OCU call it is made to the authorities to make every effort to agree when wholesale prices as low as possible while economically sustainable to allow the effective establishment of a single market in telecommunications.
