CNMC investigates possible anticompetitive practices in selling electricity
12 may. 2014The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has learned through various reports in the press, written communications to consumers and advertisements published in the media regarding supply options for domestic consumers which could be contrary to Article 3 of Law 15/2007 of July 3, Defence of Competition (LDC) and has decided to open an investigation.
In February 2014, OCU lodged a complaint with the Secretary of State for Energy and with the CNMC’s Director of Energy about the widespread existence of these practices (such as slamming or selling "door to door"), which have resulted in almost a third of consumers not knowing if they are in the open market or under the regulated tariff, and in recent years there has been a significant shift of consumers towards this open market, but usually within the same holding.
OCU will collaborate with the CNMC in all that is required as part of this investigation to end these practices which are causing significant economic harm to consumers because the free market rates usually mean higher bills.
