OCU asks car rental companies to change their terms concerning fuel

03 sep. 2014
Although we see changes in some companies, some practices are still maintained that harm consumers and negatively affect the image of Spain as a tourist destination.
OK

Continuing our campaign to end the abusive practices of some car hire companies, OCU has been in touch with some of them to inform them of this campaign and get them to adapt their policies to Spanish laws protecting consumers and users of services.
As noted in the letters we have sent to Goldcar, Interrent and Firefly, although we have recently found that some companies have improved their fuel policies, we remain concerned that these companies do not clearly indicate to clients who reserve their car online that there are additional charges for fuel and that these have to be paid at the time of pickup.

In parallel, these companies have also been contacted by the British consumer association Which? so that they change their fuel policies and comply with UK legislation on consumer protection, since many of the customers affected are British tourists who hire a car online for their holiday in Spain. This action is part of the joint campaign now underway between OCU and Which? and about which we are informing the Spanish Agency for Consumer and Food Safety (AECOSAN) and its British counterpart the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
