Appliance reliability survey

OCU Finds a significant incrase in breakdowns between 3 and 4 years from date of purchase

OCU has surveyed more than 18,000 users (4,000 Spanish) to get their opinion and experience regarding the reliability and satisfaction with the appliances they use. We found a significant increase in breakdowns occurs between 3 and 4 years after purchase. All information is published in the January edition of the OCU Compra Maestra magazine.
January is a month of sales. Many consumers choose to purchase appliances at this time because these products represent a significant outlay. Consumers surveyed by OCU say, despite being expensive products, some appliances break down more and sooner than expected. With the experience and opinions of consumers, OCU has produced a ranking of brands for different types of appliances, taking into account the reliability of the appliance (number and seriousness of breakdowns) and how far expectations are met (satisfaction) among their users and it can be very useful for people who are thinking of buying any of these appliances.

Fridge freezers
Spain is one of the European countries that opt most for this type of refrigerator. In 84% of households surveyed there is a fridge freezer. The most common faults: too much ice in 20% of cases; door not closing properly 14%; Interior light 11%; insulation 8%; and thermostat 8%.
The brands which rated above average in reliability and satisfaction, in the opinion of users, are LG, Samsung and Bosch. At the bottom is Bluesky.
Washing machines
92% of respondents said they have a washing machine at home, making, moreover, thorough use of it. They wash an average of 4 times per week.
The most common faults are with the drainage pump, buttons, spin, door and corrosion. Preferred makes (satisfaction and reliability): Miele, Electrolux, Bosch, LG and Siemens. The worst rated by respondents are Teka and Daewoo.

Spin Dryers
It is definitely the appliance in which an increased number of faults occur soonest. Most respondents said they suffered their first breakdown after around three years. However, it is the appliance that breaks down least, its main weak point being the belt. This is followed by problems with drying, with the buttons, with the door or that it stops heating. The best, according to respondents are Miele, Siemens, AEG. In last place, Aspes and Hoover.

Dishwashers
Despite being the most used appliance per week (an average of 5 times), it is also the one in which an increasing number of breakdowns happen later.
The most common faults are with the buttons and the drying function in 9% of cases; the drainage pump and the dishwasher tablet dispenser 8% of cases; and the interior light 7% of cases.
The respondents’ preferred makes are Miele, Bosch and Siemens. The worst rated, LG.
OCU reminds people that something very useful in order to select a good appliance is the energy label, as it can help save energy now that the price of electricity is very high. However, it seems that the energy rating is not one of the purchase criteria of the users in the survey: a third of them don’t know the energy rating of their electrical appliances.
