OCU supports possible sanctions by the European Commission to States by fraud emissions

14 sep. 2016

Almost a year since the scandal emissions known as Dieselgate it seems that the European Commission has decided to act in the absence of cooperation of member states to clarify how it was possible to produce this consumer fraud was discovered.

In his appearance before the Commission of Inquiry set up by the European Parliament to investigate the call Dieselgate, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, Elzbieta Bienkowska, announced last Monday its intention to open records to those member states that have failed to fulfill their obligations when checking the level of emissions from vehicles manufactured by the German group and not to punish fraud once they were discovered.

For OCU the opening of these files would be good news after a year in which consumers have been systematically ignored by Volkswagen without the national authorities have done nothing to make the perpetrators of this fraud accountable for it. OCU welcomes Bienkowska´s  words who come to confirm their suspicions that in many cases Member States have worked more in favor of the offending company for consumers. Therefore, from OCU it insists on the need for the Spanish authorities start to collaborate in a real way with the European Commission to clarify the facts and to lobby the Volkswagen group to compensate economically to consumers who have been deceived with the installation of illegal software.
