OCU criticizes the lack of ambition of the European Commission in the case of Dieselgate

23 sep. 2016

Two weeks ago the Commissioner for Justice of the EU, Vera Jurová, met with consumer organizations to hear their complaints on the subject of fraud emissions recognized by Volkswagen. During this meeting the Commissioner Jurová was found that between the demands of the organizations was gathered there that the Volkswagen repaired economically to those affected by the scandal and vowed to ensure fair treatment for them by Volkswagen.

However, after the meeting held yesterday between the commissioner and representatives of Volkswagen, it seems clear that this demand for repairs has not been taken into account by the EU authorities. For OCU it is disappointing that the action plan announced yesterday by the Commissioner for Justice does not include any monetary damages mention those affected by fraud and limited to demand the perpetrators of this scandal to repair vehicles and to inform consumers .

According OCU lack of ambition of the European Commission in this scandal involves creating a dangerous precedent for though the tortfeasor has acknowledged that it infringed Community law and the Commissioner herself has indicated that it has violated the regulations on consumer protection in at least 20 countries of the Union, is allowing offenders go unscathed limited to cease the breach without being punished or forced to compensate consumers affected by their illegal behaviour.
